The Writing of Iconography
What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy provides a non-verbal, symbolic medium for expression, alongside talking with an art therapist. The aim is to reduce stress levels, improve social, emotional and mental health by promoting self-awareness, self-compassion and a sense of agency and self-worth. It offers a route of expression when language doesn’t suffice in expressing our inner struggles.
Why would the Coptic Community benefit from Art therapy?
- Highly stigmatised environment means it’s less acceptable to verbalise inner struggles.
- Allows for a space to express oneself when it’s difficult to find the ‘right’ words.
- Already exposed to aspects of it through Iconography as it uses symbols to express church history and struggle, mirrors aspects of art therapy.
